Artisan Roast

57 Broughton St, Edinburgh EH1 3RJ, UK

Editor's Review

You’ll likely have spotted Artisan Roast’s beans around town before spotting the wooden sign of their Broughton Street café. Having been roasting in Edinburgh since 2007, and being one of the first artisan roasteries in Scotland (you can see why they chose the name…), they are fairly common in independent shops around the country – this is where it started.

Artisan Roast is not a place to go in a rush. Everything about it feels shifted down a gear from the relative madness of Leith Walk five minutes up the road. Vintage swing and jazz plays over the speakers, while the lack of a counter means the staff move casually around the shop floor – if you’re a first timer, this is a little bewildering at first, but nothing to be intimidated by.

The pourover brews, chemex and espresso based coffees are handled with equal care, meaning you may be waiting a little longer for your coffee here than elsewhere, but it is worth it. A self-service sandwich and cakes area means that you won’t be waiting for food, at least, and though the selection is small, it’s very inviting. The whole vibe feels like you’ve stepped into the living room of an old European home, the exposed wood floors, warm, low-lighting, and fizz of conversation creating an atmosphere that feels both welcoming and classy.
