Daily Press Coffee — Ocean Hill

38 Somers Street, Brooklyn, NY 11233, Brooklyn, NY 11233, USA

Editor's Review

The epic influx of coffee bars into Bedford-Stuyvesant has spurred important conversations about the damage done by gentrification—but there's also much to be lauded in new places that create community space, where people can meet, work, gather, bring kids, and hear live music—all while drinking wonderful coffee, in this case.

This sister shop to the Daily Press' first shop several C train stops closer to Manhattan (and which was also an early gentrifying arrival on its block at the time) brings finer coffee to the further corners of Bed-Stuy, specifically the subsection known as Ocean Hill. During the day, sunlight absolutely fills this corner space, whose broad windows along the Rockaway Avenue side open wide to let in fresh air.

The coffee and espresso backbone is Irving Farm, with a featured roaster (usually another local Brooklyn operation) rotating every couple of months. A small kitchen set-up furnishes breakfast burritos, while the pastry case features treats from Four & Twenty Blackbirds and more. A spacious area towards the back back opens into a performance space with everything from musical acts to kids' sing-a-longs having graced the stage.
