De Koffieschenkerij

Oudekerksplein 27, 1012 GX Amsterdam, Netherlands

Editor's Review

It’s not just old meets new here; it’s Medieval turf hosts new-wave coffee. De Koffieschenkerij, a retro Dutch term for something like “coffee bestower,” is located in Amsterdam’s oldest building, dating back to 1306. Nowadays, exhibitions and cultural events rotate through the Oude Kerk – literally the “old church.” However, the venue has stayed put and grown in popularity since life and business partners Job Oosting and Anne Rijks founded it in May 2013. No wonder: a museum smack in the middle of the Red-Light District is an unexpected and much-needed spot for a specialty cafe.

There are also soups, sandwiches, and classic Dutch treats (behold the appletaart). Spread over two floors still intact with heavy wooden features and Delft-style tiles, De Koffieschenkerij takes up what was once the priests’ sacristy. The courtyard provides a leafy sanctuary for those needing a break from – or a blessing before – navigating the neighbourhood.
