Empire State Coffee
36-38 Nethergate, Dundee DD1 4ET, UK
In the centre of Dundee, you're not short of choices for places to stop, or things to do. The Overgate Shopping Centre curves round St Mary's Church and blends into the surroundings seamlessly, giving the whole area a very contemporary, cosmopolitan feel. Right on the square you'll find Empire State Coffee, an Italian inspired cafe and roastery.
All of Empire State Coffee's offerings are roasted on site, with expansion to another site, more focused specifically on the coffee side, imminent. The cafe gets a good amount footfall, and there's usually a steady stream of people queuing inside, as well as sitting in the mezzanine area. It's decor, unsurprisingly, gets its inspiration from New York, and this is mirrored in the hustle and bustle of the place.
Empire State is currently only making espresso based coffees, a blend of Vietnamese and Brazillian beans that results in a strong flavour with good acidity. On the food side, you'll find house-made deli sandwiches, a good selection of cakes and traybakes, and again in keeping with the New York theme, pizzas, all of which are made on site. That's one of Empire State's greatest tricks — it has the feel of a good chain store, in its service and slickness, whilst retaining all the quality of an independent business.
