Filament Coffee Roastery
44-44A E Trinity Rd, Edinburgh EH5 3DJ, UK
Café roasteries are always a nice surprise, like going to a restaurant that lets you peer into the kitchen and watch the chefs work. It's almost therapeutic to be sitting enjoying a long black with the rattle and hum of roasting beans churning away behind you, not to mention perfuming the place with an uncapturable scent.
Filament Coffee already had a good reputation in the city, thanks to their involvement in the Scottish Aeropress Championships and two existing cafés, so their move into roasting was inevitable. Newhaven, just along from the more buzzy Leith, is a quiet spot for the new venture, along a residential street just up from the Firth of Forth. A spacious ground floor is matched by Filament's typically minimalist menu board, while a hidden mezzanine offers communal seating, and is pretty perfect for those who see coffee shops as free office space.
In terms of the offering, it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", with a similar menu to the other shops — nice cakes, pastries, simple sandwiches — but quality shines through. When the coffee is this good, everything else has to match up to it. A gift for locals who previously would have had to wander down to the Shore for a good brew, but also worth a visit in its own right, and further proof that Filament are one of Edinburgh's best.
