Filter Coffeehouse and Espresso Bar

1726 20th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA

Editor's Review

Filter Coffeehouse sits a few steps down in a slim building with a rounded exterior on a residential street just off of DC's bustling Dupont Circle. The shop may feel a little bit like a cave, but it's one that encourages a sense of community through a passion for coffee, conversation, and bikes. A characteristically friendly DC staff serves coffee from Ceremony Coffee Roasters on espresso and Fetco as well as manual brew on V60 and French Press. The shop opened in 2010, and while it isn't the most modern cafe you'll visit in DC, it is both reliable and accessible.

Filter's old school vibe is best exemplified in a sign on the counter that lets customers know that there is no Wi-Fi. The owners of Filter would prefer that you have conversations or just disengage from the connected life over a cup of coffee. Indeed, Filter is not a laptop graveyard, but rather a pleasant haunt where friends catch up, cyclists move in and out of the bike-friendly space, and one defiant soul uses their cell phone as a hotspot. Don't be that person; Filter is a lovely place to lose yourself in the coffee.
