gangundgäbe

Kapuzinerstraße 12, 80337 München, Germany

Editor's Review

gangundgäbe, or rather gang und gäbe as one would actually write it, means commonplace or ordinary in German, but this warm, elegant venue is hardly that. With rounded furniture, dark fin de siecle lighting, and jazz humming in the background, this café has eschewed the neo-trendy, stripped-back feel of many of its competitors and instead created something that feels like a grown-up salon (even the WiFi password is a nod to German New Objectivty artist Otto Dix), albeit one with a large Giesen roaster tucked away at the back. A large window affords a great view of the street and forms the whole of the café's front-facing side, and there is a well-stocked magazine rack for browsers who aren't occupied, as many seemed to be, by laptops or books.

Coffee is roasted in-house, and is also available to buy in bags with a lovely, block-colour design, and a range of filter options are available alongside the espresso-based drinks. A short walk from Goetheplatz in the south of the city, this café is a great spot to relax with a book or get some work done.
