Kaffe 1668 (South)

275 Greenwich St., New York, NY 10007

Editor's Review

Kaffee 1668 is Scandinavian-influenced cafe, and Swedish owner Tomas Tjarnberg borrows elements of his homeland to add warmth and quality brews to this Financial District location. Roasting their own supply of beans in Red Hook under the name Landskap, this spot is tucked away on a smaller street in the neighborhood. A small window front beckons the way to a fortress of coffee, whose quarters are spacious enough to easily find yourself a seat at the massive community table or sets of tables in the corner, and if you're really having trouble finding a place to sit, there's yet more seating in the basement.

The cafe's signature Serta-mascot-like sheep rest on the shelves in between vintage coffee grinders and indoor plants, making for a uniquely whimsical decor for the otherwise serious coffee world. Kaffe 1668 functions as much as a lunch spot as it does a coffee bar, whose daytime menu is packed with made-to-order toasts, paninis and housemade pastries, and grab-and-go options include a fridge of yogurts and juices. The coffee choices are equally ample and on point, and you can indulge in several different brews via pour-over or grab something quick and simple off the espresso-milk menu. Non-dairy options include macadamia, almond, and soy milk.
