Everyone gets lost in Brighton’s Lanes, a tightly packed maze of shopping streets in the old town. Wanderers will be overjoyed if they stumble on this beautiful café with a bright, Scandinavian feel, minimalistic but engaging. Lost in the Lanes focus on great food from an open kitchen, but the coffee is taken as seriously: V60s using a choice of Has Bean coffees presented in crockery from Copenhagen, and an impressive Slayer espresso machine stalking the bar.

As you enter, your eye is drawn to the red Has Bean coffee bags on shelving and the aforementioned Slayer. There’s great attention to detail in all design aspects, from clever use of plants menu to plating to furniture. It’s run by Izabela who has a vision for the establishment, “Simply put, we are very serious about making people happy. Our coffee and food is full of harmonious ideas.”

Kipling’s poetic words decorate the otherwise unadorned walls while large windows, lighting and use of mirrors ensures great light this feels like an Instagram-ready café. The conversion from a retail space by architects Yelo ensures a unique beauty and functional charm. Food-wise, Lost excels with dishes, cakes and desserts that treat the eyes as well as the taste-buds. It's an essential visit – just make sure you find your way back.
