80 Nicolson St, Edinburgh EH8 9EW, UK
Edinburgh has a funny habit of changing a road’s name half way down. From Waverley Station going south, North Bridge becomes South Bridge becomes Nicholson Street becomes Clerk Street becomes South Clerk Street becomes — you get the idea. Near the top, in amongst the students, you’ll find Machina Espresso.
Machina has a reputation as a place for real coffee experts – they made up one third of the judging panel for the 2017 Scottish Aeropress Championships – but they still manage to create an atmosphere that is welcoming, not intimidating.
As a result, it’s fair to say that this place is great gateway for anyone looking to branch out from their traditional coffee order. There’s always a good filter brewing – washed, single origin, clean and fruity tasting – while their espressos are strong and rich, like good stout, or proper chocolate. In the centre of the city, and very much at the centre of the scene, Machina already feels like an Edinburgh institution.
