Maison d'etre

154 Canonbury Rd, N1 2UP

Editor's Review

Nestling quietly on the otherwise slightly frantic Highbury Corner roundabout, Maison d’etre is a congenial café, decked out in a slightly French boutique style. It’s not the biggest venue, though there is an enclosed patio at the rear for when the weather is clement enough, but its cosy feel is one of its strengths. The coffee is good, using Square Mile’s Red Brick for a range of espresso-based drinks, including iced coffee. They also sell a wider variety of Square Mile and other roasters’ beans to brew at home.

There is a delicious range of locally sourced food, with a good brunch menu and hearty sandwiches, as well as bread from Paul’s Road bakery and a range of cakes and pastries, some made at the café and some by the artisan bakery Seven Seeded. Unpretentious, friendly, and homely, Maison d’etre is a lovely little spot in which to escape the Islington bustle.
