pinhole coffee

231 Cortland Ave, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA

Editor's Review

Owner JoEllen Depakakibo cares deeply about her community and it shines through in her café. Pinhole opened in 2014, serving its Bernal Heights neighborhood with a variety of events: author readings, artist shows, and food pop-ups. More often than not, weekend proceeds are donated to a nonprofit cause.

The café is nestled on a quiet corner, located just off a shopping strip and across from residences. It’s colorfully decorated with a touch of whimsy. Multi-colored wood slats created by local artist Leah Rosenberg cover one wall, wooden stumps serve as chairs, and magnetic letters within a child’s reach are at the counter front. Pinhole’s coffee offerings rotate often with guest roasters.

Pinhole is named after the pinhole camera, a very simple camera with a small hole made in a light-proof box. As light passes through the hole, an inverted image is projected. These cameras are on display in a corner of Pinhole.

Among the many specialty cafés that San Francisco has to offer, Pinhole stands out as a neighborhood gem with laid-back, kid-friendly vibes and comfortable decor.
