Red Kite Cafe

7-8 Cadzow Place, Edinburgh EH7 5SN, UK

Editor's Review

Red Kite Cafe landed in Edinburgh in late summer of 2016, taking over a site left abandoned and squalid by its previous owners. In a short time, the place transformed into a bright, open lunch and coffee spot, buoyed by former staffers from Edinburgh institutions Artisan Roast and Peter’s Yard.

The presence of Artisan Roast has carried through to Red Kite – all of their coffee is supplied by the Edinburgh roastery, including their decaf, with their beans available to take home too. The Edinburgh theme is continued throughout their suppliers.

In a city dominated by small, cosy coffee nooks, Red Kite is something of an outlier in terms of its size. You can’t miss it on the street – a wide, glass fronted shop that stretches along Cadzow Place. It can get busy, especially on a weekend, but there’s usually always a spot you can sit. The food at Red Kite is fantastic too – soups, curries, breakfast rolls, plenty of vegetarian options, and home-baked sweet and savoury scones. Very good things happen in their kitchen, and with the cafe a short walk from Calton Hill and Holyrood Palace, it’s well located for a walk around the highlights of the city.
