Smith Canteen

343 Smith St Brooklyn, NY 11231

Editor's Review

Carroll Gardens is one of the more serene residential neighborhoods in Brooklyn, a tree-lined area with a mix of families young and old. And Smith Canteen, located on the corner of Smith and Carroll, is sort of ground zero if you want to soak up the Carroll Gardens vibe. Owned by the proprietors of the Southern food/fried chicken joint Wilma Jean (just across the street), as well as the minimalist Vietnamese spot Nightingale Nine (right up the block), Smith Canteen’s location, also just across from PS 58 and Carroll Park, and next door to the long-running cocktail bar Brooklyn Social, makes this a perennial hotspot in the neighborhood.

Known for their sandwiches and salads as much as for their great Counter Culture coffee, the Canteen is a great place to enjoy an egg sandwich or quinoa or farro bowl in the morning, or one of the many excellent lunch options made to order, like the cabrese salami, provolone, and pickled pepper baguette, a sandwich of marinated beets, shitake mushroom, and parmesan on multi-grain, a fried chicken wrap, or the Vietnamese salad. They also have several pre-made sandwiches available if you want to crab lunch and a coffee to go, but Smith Canteen – in its cozy wood-walled confines leftover from its former life as an apothecary – is a great place to linger.
