Taylor St Baristas - Monument

2 Botolph Alley, EC3R 8DR

Editor's Review

This unhurried café with its ever-changing coffee library approach feels light years away from the high volume quality coffee efficiency Taylor Street are renowned for. The coffee gallery at Monument is intended to showcase specialty coffee and you will find a great variety of roasters rotated here. You can enjoy espresso based drinks, batch brews made regularly by Chemex or filter coffee using any number of methods.

Approaching the coffee shop feels like stepping back in time. Monument itself, once a major London landmark, is dwarfed by the modern city but this café is set in a tiny alleyway off the main streets and the warm lighting, home-worn feel and reclaimed furniture give it a quirky feel that wouldn’t be out of place in a Cambridge side street. Downstairs is Taylor Street’s training centre and the most remarkable toilet you have ever seen.

There are coffee beans and a wide range of coffee gear available to buy. Staff are happy to advise customers on brew methods and recipes. Although it's very coffee focussed the cafe also serves Postcard teas, Willie’s Cacao (both as bars and melted in drinking chocolate) and breakfasts and lunches made in-house. Their banana bread is legendary.

At the time of the Great Fire that Monument commemorates, Samuel Pepys buried his fine wines and cheeses in the ground to save them from the fire. If it were today, he’d probably have a few bags of these coffee beans buried there too!
