The Shop

At the Andaz Hotel 485 5th Ave., New York, NY

Editor's Review

A surprising oasis cast in the beautiful glow of the New York Public Library main branch just opposite, this lobby-niche cafe in the Andaz hotel serves up local Long Island City Coffee Roasters beans for all espresso preparations.

A sleek operation, The Shop's tasteful marble counters and black wood accents make it a perfect neighbor to The Bar Downstairs, an equally slick spot for alcoholic libations whose presence is well-stated in the cafe, as shelves are filled with cocktail shakers and pint glasses branded with the name. Although seating is limited at The Shop, there's also a spacious common table, and the natural lighting is perfect for pausing with a coffee and something chic from the pastry case. Try a custom-cafe-sized doughnut from Brooklyn's Dough or a treat from the packed food menu of breakfast dishes, sandwiches, and salads from the hotel restaurant it shares space with. The coffee menu is a mix of espresso and drip drinks, along with a small, tempting list of wines.
