The World AeroPress Championships: Carl Micheel

The next World AeroPress Championship competitor that we are interviewing is Carl Micheel. Although originally from Germany, Carl won the English AeroPress Championship. Carl works at Mokoko in Bath, though plans to move to London one day; he started his career in specialty coffee in 2016 in Vienna at Süssmund Kaffee. Follow his journey on Instagram: @baasmoustache


Why did you choose to enter the AeroPress Championship?

Competing last year in Austria was great fun and I met loads of good people. I chose to enter the English AeroPress Championship because I just moved to England at the beginning of the year and wanted to try my luck and make new coffee friends.

What’s your favourite way to make coffee (other than AeroPress of course!)?

I just love a clean V60 pour over.

What led you to using the AeroPress?

In the beginning, as a coffee enthusiast, I was keen to try different brewing methods to make coffee at home.

Which grinder will you use for the competition and why?

I'm using the Comandante C40 grinder. I just love everything about the grinder. It's well made, easy to handle, produces great grind distribution, and it's made in Germany - like me.

How did you get in to the coffee industry?

I got into coffee because I  got bored of bitter tasting coffees and I thought there must be something else out there. I looked up some nice cafés in Hamburg and was blown away by my first specialty filter coffee at Stockholmespressoclub. It was a Kenyan coffee roasted by Koppi. From that point on I think my path to becoming a coffee professional was sown.

What are you most excited about in coffee?

Personally, I'm most excited about coffee competitions. I like the buzz of being on stage. I learn a lot about myself during prepping for competitions and it equally improves my brewing skills and coffee knowledge.
