Café Grumpy — Fashion District

This area just south of Times Square suddenly features several good coffee options, and one of the reliably enjoyable ones is this spacious outpost of Cafe Grumpy. Featuring locally roasted beans and a small but welcoming pastry case, Grumpy will lure you back again and again with their seasonal espresso blends and manually brewed single origin coffees. They do a lot of to-go business here, and it's a fast-paced cafe with a lot of folks moving in and out all day. But you can linger at one of the two large communal tables, and you might be surprised at just how eclectic the crowd can be, in an area that on the surface might seem like it would be full of faceless office workers and loopy tourists. Just don't try to use a laptop! 

This neighborhood, so close to the crumbling Port Authority bus terminal, for many years was one of the last holdouts of crusty, edgy old New York City, but Grumpy's success here makes clear that delicious coffee is not just for downtown anymore.
