Cafe Grumpy—Financial District
20 Stone St, New York, NY 10004, USA
Editor's Review
Cafe Grumpy is an independently-owned operation that roasts out of Greenpoint and has a small chain of locations throughout the city. With warm lighting, high ceilings, and classical details, their Financial District location tastefully matches the architecture of the old banks and buildings of its neighborhood. The details are clean, and canvasses of Pablo Picasso paintings add warmth to this otherwise austere space.
Cafe Grumpy provides an ample amount of both house-sourced tea and coffee selections, from a single origin and blend for espresso (served on an impressive Synesso Hydra in Cafe Grumpy's trademark bright orange) to several single origin coffees available on pour-over. Pastries and tea are sourced from local establishments, and seasonal specials like matcha hot cider make for a sweet treat when you're looking for a break from coffee. Many of Cafe Grumpy's spots discourage laptop engagement, and while laptops are allowed here, WiFi is not provided, and a central community table encourages interaction beyond the screen. Non-dairy alternatives include soy, almond, and oat milk.
