Carmel by the Green
287a Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, E2 0EL
Imagine, a little piece of relaxed California vibe in Bethnal Green. Tucked away behind a chicken shop, a pebble’s throw from the Underground station entrance sits this sea-green café, named after the West Coast seaside town of Carmel by the Sea. Owner, Saida was inspired by West Coast life, and has created a space focussed on healthy, relaxed lifestyle. To achieve this, she has combined a quality espresso offer, fresh juices, curated art exhibitions and homemade food. It’s a spot for a leisurely take on life.
Coffee is from 80 Stone Coffee Roasters from Fulham. Simone and Roberto from 80 Stone also run Chairs and Coffee where they roast in house on reconditioned 5kg kg F.I.M.T, (Fabbrica Italiana Macchine Tostatrici) roaster produced in Turin in around 1960. Carmel work with the roaster to develop an espresso blend for the café. The blend was chosen to work well however customers chose to drink their coffee. Currently the offer is espresso based drinks.
Carmel’s menu is constantly changing and is known for being healthy and tasty. California is the influence again with an abundance of options catering for dietary intolerances and restrictions - gluten-free, low GI and vegan. They serve a Tex Mex bowl, daily salads and hot dishes and raw vegan cakes. Art on display rotates monthly and is no lip service to exhibiting – Carmel display genuinely though provoking art. This combination of art, California vibe, food and drink along with purpose built, 'sea-washed' wooden furniture makes Carmel by the Green an oasis from the busy street.
