Husk is deeply rooted in the local community while equally welcoming to visitors. It’s that rarity, an accessible and socially inclusive café with very high standards of coffee and food. Head barista Jarryd ensures that standards are high and works in partnership with Dumo Mathema of the Roastery Department to select and roast the Hustakeer blend. Climpson and Sons also provide espresso and filter options and coffee here is superbly made.
It’s a community café, a place that defies categorisation with plenty space to chat and enjoy the coffee. It has probably the most diverse café clientele we’ve evet seen and is all the better for that. The centre is run by London City Mission but Husk welcomes those of all religions or none. There are community classes, art exhibitions (often on challenging social themes) and a performance space.
Perhaps part of the attraction to the local community is that prices are low, some of the lowest we’ve seen in London. Food is all vegetarian and available in gluten free formats. The daal, cooked by Amira who lives locally, was the best we have ever tasted – evoking Bengali recipes passed down the generations. There is avocado toast, banana and peanut butter toast, fresh hummus and soup. Pastries and cakes are delivered daily from local bakeries. Tea is from Suki and hot chocolate from Chocolate Abyss.
We were genuinely charmed by this warm and friendly café and delighted to hear that you can drink such a fine cup of coffee in Limehouse.
