In Bloom

48 Clarendon Pl, Glasgow G20 7PZ, UK

Editor's Review

When Kurt Cobain got into the studio to cut a demo of In Bloom back in 1990, a track that would end up on their seminal Nevermind album, it’s unlikely he anticipated a vegan cafe in Glasgow being named after it nearly 30 years on. However, the world works in mysterious ways.

Unlike other novelty cafes, In Bloom’s Nirvana theme isn’t all pervading – a couple of concert tickets on the wall and a playlist that revolves around 90s grunge seems to be the long and short of it. Really it’s focus is on the vegan side – fake cheese and fake meat abounds across a neat menu of veganised versions of classic sandwiches, the vegan Philly Cheese Steak a highlight. Owner Rachel Sharp cures and marinates all the vegan meats herself in-house, while coffee comes from Glasgow favourites Ovenbird Roasters.

For something that could feel very gimmicky, there’s something pleasingly unpretentious about In Bloom. During my visit one customer thanks the owner for creating an environment that helps with her anxiety, another shares his recent gig recommendations, it’s that kind of place – a small cafe with good food and good chat, that just happens to be run by some massive Nirvana fans. Kurt would approve.
