Standl 20
Elisabethmarkt, Elisabethpl. Stand Nr. 20, 80796 München, Germany
Editor's Review
The Elizabethmarkt is a cluster of small, square shops and eateries on the northern edge of the trendy Maxvorstadt area of Munich. More or less in the middle is Standl 20, a real gem of a café that is worth making an extra effort to visit. The interior is small, with a standing area in front of a bar dominated by a beautiful Mirage lever machine with a light wood finish. Tables ring the walls and there is also seating outdoors and next to a flower stall, an inadvertent splash of colour for visitors to the café. Staff are friendly, very well-informed, and happy to offer advice or recommendations about Munich's coffee scene and the wider German one.
Coffee comes from Dachau-based JB Kaffee, either branded for Standl 20 specifically or from the rest of the roasteries range, and can be enjoyed in espresso-based drinks or a variety of filter methods, including V60 and Aeropress. There are always plenty of blends and single origins to choose from, and you can also try a cold brew, espresso with tonic, or the delicious affogato. Johannes Bayer, the JB of JB, is one of the two partners in the café, along with the effervescent Paul, and it's little surprise that a roaster with such a strong reputation has had a hand in such a good venue. Standl 20 delivers, both for coffee and for ambience – don't miss it.
