Tart
25 The Pavement, London SW4 0JA, UK
Editor's Review
The first thing you see when you enter Tart in Clapham is a playful graphic sprawled across the wall: an 18th century lady gracefully sniffing a steamy tart. The graphic sums up the café well; it is light-hearted, friendly and, obviously (but not solely), serves delicious tarts. About fifty metres from Clapham Common tube station, it is conveniently located, and not too far from Brixton where their coffee hails from – Volcano Coffee Works, whose focus is on sustainability, supplies the beans which are also on sale.
Tart has an alcohol license but, unlike the newer East Dulwich incarnation which is open until later, it doesn’t serve alcohol. It is therefore more of a morning or daytime haunt, confirmed by their classic brunch menu and emphasis on being pet-friendly (although the cakes are displayed on dangerously low counters so be careful with inquisitive dogs). If our unpredictable climes permit, take your cappuccino to the outdoor seating because the view of the common offers the perfect vantage point for people- and dog-watching.
