The Canary
63, 61 Old Bethnal Green Rd, London E2 6QA, UK
Editor's Review
Bethnal Green is home to a fair few independent coffeeshops. Unlike the homogeneity seen in some areas, though, each Bethnal Green café has its very much its own character. Not least The Canary, combining hairdresser with retail and cool, relaxed, neighbourhood hangout and community hub. It’s a light, bright, airy space with espresso from Cast Iron and house-made alternative milks on the weekend. Local art is displayed on the wall. Filter coffee is available on weekends.
The hairdressers occupies half of the premise and is the sister shop to King’s Canary in Fitzrovia, using only vegan hair products. Food includes avocado on toast with pickled radish and other seasonally focussed vegetarian and vegan fare on an ever changing menu. Milk is from Estate Dairy and loose leaf tea from the Camden Tea Company. There’s also Prana Chai and independent soft drinks such as ChariTea , Lemonaid and Clubmate (a caffeinated carbonated mate-extract beverage made by the Loscher Brewery near Münchsteinach, Germany).
