How to make Cold Brew coffee (Hario Mizudashi)

In today’s video Cath Seay (Coffee Expert and founder of Curators Coffee) is making Cold Brew coffee at home, using the lovely Hario Mizudashi Cold Brew Pot, and giving tips and advice on how to master this cold brewing method that is a life saver in hot summer days.

First things first, though, what is Cold Brew? Cold Brew is a simple and easy way to make filter coffee by immersing ground coffee in cold water over an extended period of time, resulting in a smooth, mellow and delicious drink.

There are other ways to make filter coffee that you drink cold, such as Cold Drip (also known as Slow Drip) or iced coffee (also known as Japanese iced coffee). These are different methods that extract the coffee differently resulting in different flavours.

Because Cold Brew is brewed using cold water, there are some coffee solubles that won’t dissolve like they would if you brewed with hot water. As a result you get a light refreshing brew with a low acidity that tastes super smooth.

Cath’s recommended Cold Brew Recipe / Cold Brew Ratio:

  • 70g of ground coffee (medium — coarse grind)
  • 1L of water

Simply immerse the 70g of ground coffee in 1L of water and put straight in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours. After that simply remove the coffee grounds. The brew will be more dense at the bottom so take care to stir before serving. It can be drunk as it straight out of the fridge or served with ice.

Why use a Cold Brew Pot?

You can make Cold Brew coffee using pretty much any container and filtering the ground coffee with a strainer or filter paper.

However, we highly recommend using a Cold Brew pot, for a more convenient and less ‘fiddly’ experience. The Hario Mizudashi cold brew coffee maker features an internal mesh container that filters the coffee. So no need to use multiple containers, just a single, easy to use and clean, device that is also dishwasher safe.

It also has an eye-catching design, amazing cost benefit and quite frankly, the best name in the game!
