Editor's Review

The name “General Store” has a real neighbourly feel about it. A kind of one-stop-shop in a one-horse-town run by a kindly old gent who can get his hands on anything. Being tucked into an 18th century pub in Abbeyhill, Century General Store takes up the name rather fittingly.

The location really is beautiful. A small alley down some steps takes you to Easter Road, and in the other direction a small hill takes you down to Holyrood Palace and the bottom of The Royal Mile. If you’re wanting to start your day with some tourist spots, then Century offers a good breakfast menu, pastries, as well as excellent coffee.

The other thing about Century General Store’s coffee is that you’re unlikely to find it anywhere else in Edinburgh. The team here have cast their net further to support interesting roasters around the UK for their rotating guest espresso – London’s Dark Arts, Strangers from Norwich, and James Gourmet Coffee from Ross-on-Wye have all appeared. This attention to detail is reflected across every aspect of the cafe, making it one of Edinburgh’s real hidden gems.
