Monks Coffee Roasters
Bilderdijkstraat 46, 1052 NB Amsterdam, Netherlands
Editor's Review
Opened in summer 2016 on the city centre’s western perimeter, Monks Coffee Roasters is hardly monastic. Run by silver-haired Patrick Abbott and his steady staff, the cafe is a lively, bright and comfy place – the kind of a place where the barista might ask you to decide which playlist he should put on. The high ceilings and subtly presented industrial furnishings provide a kind of blank canvas on which to paint everything from the professional aspirations you discuss during a coffee break with a colleague to the cupid-arrowed fantasies you generate whilst canoodling on a date.
Monks plans to roast its own coffee, though currently serves an espresso blend custom-created by Bocca. Abbott, whose roots are Irish, lived for a period in Australia, and his eclectic locavore-leaning brunch menu reflects that. One day you can try the very Dutch mackerel sandwich (fish from acclaimed Frank’s Smoke House) and the next, revert to the Antipodean-driven international phenomenon that is avocado toast.
