119's exterior on steadily gentrifying Lower Clapton Road seems incongruous to the spacious and elegant interior. Although minimal, it feels blessed with a feminine hand: retro styling that sees pot plants and large paper globe lampshades bathed in light through the large glass shopfront; a beautiful white Nuova Simonelli on the counter that fits in with the luminous theme; not to mention the all female workforce (at least on my visit). My overall impression, reinforced by excellent service, is of a more grown up style of cafe, lacking in pretention.

Both the coffee and food menus are well thought out, with Workshop beans as standard and some Has Bean options for filter, and a more interesting take on the regular sandwiches, salads and on-bread and sweet options. Keep an eye out for supper clubs run here, the menu I was handed to peruse looked great.
