[a] Coffee House
15 Huỳnh Khương Ninh, Đa Kao, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam
Editor's Review
In 2011, Nguyen Truc, a Saigon-based artist first opened the doors of [a] Coffee House with the intention of having a space to meet with friends and talk about art over cups of cà phê đá (a sweet Vietnamese ice coffee). By 2012, Truc’s curiosity and interest in experimenting with small batch beans and slow-drip coffee set [a] Coffee House soaring towards a brave new world of brewing. This murmur shook the ground of Huỳnh Khương Ninh where Truc first opened and set in motion a roaring wave of change felt all the up in Hanoi. And so began Vietnam’s venture into specialty coffee.
At present, [a] Coffee House roasts their own beans in-house, sourced by The Married Beans who farm coffee in Đà Lạt and the surrounding area, in addition to Comco who import from regions outside of Vietnam. That said, Truc also likes to maintain direct relationships with his farmers, one of which is located in Đạ Sar and grows perfect Red Bourbon; a particular favourite of [a] Coffee House customers.
The house itself reflects Truc’s character to great effect. Peaceful and understated, overflowing shelves stacked with large books of art and each flat surface an exhibition of gratitude from Truc’s many friends who have left behind pieces of art in return for a place to stay in the city. This place will certainly represent a part of Saigon’s history in years to come.
