Back to Black
Weteringstraat 48, 1017 SP Amsterdam, Netherlands
Editor's Review
Just a selfie stick’s toss from the museum quarter, where the world’s most precious Rembrandts and Van Goghs hang, you’ll find Back to Black. The cafe has a relaxed family-den vibe, replete with resident cat. It readily hosts locals needing a quiet spot to work as much as tourists making the sightseeing rounds.
Friends since childhood, Inge Bulthuis and Noortje Vlutters established the business in summer 2014. Back to Black has since built a reputation as a solid cafe with a rotation of mostly women baristas and as an Amsterdam micro-roaster that is – rare in this city – female-run. The name conjures up Amy Winehouse’s hit to some, but is meant to emphasize an appreciation for coffee so good it need not be blanched by additives. By 2017, the roasting business was so booming, they had to move their Giesen W6 (along with their baking operation) into a pink-walled industrial unit in the city’s far west.
