Birch Coffee — Seventh Ave
56 7th Ave New York, NY, 10011
Editor's Review
Birch takes a holistic approach to the coffee business, from the design of their cafes, to their staff, to their roasting operation, bakery and other food partners…all of it. These guys know how to make a welcoming shop – while this small space, just south of 14th Street, holds just a handful of seats and features a fairly limited menu, commensurate with its size, that does nothing to take away from the charm.
Birch has its own roaster, in Long Island City, and they have started to source their own teas as well – the well-trained staff here knows how to deliver reliable espresso drinks, cold brew (in popular take-away growlers as well), and drip coffee options. And while the food choices at this outlet are more limited than at some of their larger shops, you can still get some nice pastries, high-end granola bars and other various treats. Plus they have a program called “Ignition Initiative,” where they offer their customers little conversation prompts if you want to actually make a friend and chat over coffee rather than stare blankly at your phone in a room full of strangers. Mildly hilarious, maybe, but it fits in with the genuine, friendly approach Birch takes to their coffee culture.
