Black Gold Amsterdam
Korte Koningsstraat 13, 1011 EX Amsterdam, Netherlands
Editor's Review
Happen to be a collector of ’90s hip-hop and boombap records – and as picky about caffeine-drinking as cratedigging? Then skedaddle on down to Black Gold.
Nestled in the neighbourhood known as Lastage, somewhere between Chinatown and Waterlooplein, this is the place for specialty beats and beans. Proprietor Siebrand van Hengel is a music-head, though by no means does he talk above anyone’s head; in fact, he is an ideal interlocutor, patiently and pleasantly sharing his music knowledge.
Since opening in spring 2015, Black Gold has worked closely with Amsterdam micro-roaster White Label Coffee, proudly serving their fruit-forward coffees and adopting their no-frills aesthetic. Guest roasts from European specialty standouts, such as The Barn and April, appear in rotation. Need to carbo-reload after all your zealous turntabling? Also available are fresh baked goods and grilled cheese sandwiches. Plus, English-language magazines and other reading material are available to entertain visitors needing to rest their ears.
