Blue Bottle Coffee
582 Mateo St, Los Angeles, CA 90013, USA
Editor's Review
Located in the former Handsome Coffee Roasters space, Blue Bottle's Arts District roastery café sparked the first of what would be several locations of expansion in Los Angeles. After merging with Handsome's team, the space retains many of the same elements. Simplicity is spelled out here, from the oak wood counters and benches to exposed wooden high beam ceilings and air pipes.
Like many buildings here, this modern industrial design reflects the neighborhood's origins as an area filled with old warehouses and local artists' galleries. However, neighbors of the area haven't stopped developing, and the streets today practically sparkle with one new complex after another. Blue Bottle saw promise in this space early on.
This outlet hosts Saturday tours and keeps things simple with a standard yet reliable menu of standard espresso-milk beverages and three different pour-overs. Their signature New Orleans chicory cold brew will keep you buzzing and delighted, and a piping hot liège waffle made on site is the perfect pick-me-up sugar rush. If you catch them on a good day, there's a chance there'll be a taco truck out front, along with an ever-growing set of regulars that have made this location a central neighborhood hang.
