Boogie Down Grind Café Powered by StartUp Box
866 Hunts Point Ave, Bronx, NY 10474, USA
Editor's Review
Located in the gritty Hunts Point neighborhood of the South Bronx, close to the massive Hunts Point Cooperative Market industrial food distribution center, nestled amongst city housing and drab residential complexes, this is probably not the first place you would expect to procure an excellent oat milk double latte or cold brew on tap. But once you visit the awkwardly – yet brilliantly – named Boogie Down Grind Café Powered By StartUp Box, you will definitely be glad that you did!
Locally owned and operated, with support from the South Bronx social enterprise organization StartUp Box, who work to create technology and entrepreneurship opportunities for local residents, Boogie Down is a true oasis in the land of bodega coffee and shrink-wrapped baked goods. The beans are from Birch, and the drinks are expertly crafted, but the prices are remarkably reasonable – even complicated single-origin options usually come in under $4 – and they work hard here to make their great coffee welcoming and available to this diverse community, happily explaining the different drink options to visitors, welcoming kids from the school up the block, and generally serving as much as a neighborhood hangout as a moneymaking café.
Review: Josh Madell
They offer special discounts like “Teacher Tuesdays” and “First Responder Fridays,” a small lending library, lots of neighborhood art and events postings on the walls, and the vibe is very local, but still welcoming to all. Great pastry options too, both sweet and savory, from local bakery Delices & Co.—try the cheese puff!
