Caffè il Momento
Singel 180, 1015 AJ Amsterdam, Netherlands
Editor's Review
Don’t be fooled by the Italian name. This Dutch-run business serves its own brand of speciality coffee, supplied by esteemed Amsterdam roasters Lot Sixty One. Espresso and espresso-based drinks are the main draw at Caffè il Momento, but there are baked goods and occasional pour-overs, too.
Exposed brick walls and repurposed burlap coffee bags add a warm, raw feel to the place. The international staff are laidback but no less professional. One notably Italianate aspect of the café is its high tables, ideal for those who like to stand while they sip.
Those seeking to spend more than a few 'momenti' inside, should pull up a stool near the store front window. Gaze ahead at the fitting bronze bust of Multatuli, the nom de plume for a Dutch author best known for Max Havelaar, a novel criticizing Dutch colonial practices in Java, Indonesia, and eventually loaning its title to the Netherlands Fairtrade foundation.
