Caffènation
Mechelsesteenweg 16, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium
Editor's Review
By far the most prolific roaster providing beans to other cafés in the region, Caffènation’s flagship café should be on your coffee tour of Antwerp. Slightly south of the centrum of the city, this coffee shop sits just off a key bike commuter route into the centre. There are people hopping on and off bikes to enjoy their morning coffee; ideally out on the large frontage which can act as a morning sun trap, or in the cavernous multi levels of the café itself.
As you’d expect from a roaster’s coffee shop, the coffee is good - our espresso was rich and nutty, well extracted. There’s warm friendly service and surprisingly - given it’s in the middle of a city - a local feel to the place. An homage to cycling can be felt and seen through the inside and it would come as no surprise to see racks of road bikes outside on the weekend.
Well worth a visit and a good stop for buying beans; there’s a dedicated coffee bagging/grinding station as you go in, and as you’re close to the source of the finished product, it’ll be sold with good advice.
