Chye Seng Huat Hardware
150 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore 207563
It is easy to miss this hip and trendy cafe as you walked along Tyrwhitt Road. The Art Deco shophouse looks nothing like a typical cafe. In like manner, its signboard – Chye Seng Huat Hardware – gives no indication that the shop serves coffee. In reality, the name of this cafe speaks volumes. In Chinese, Chye Seng Huat, literally means to flourish again. The word 'Hardware' pays homage to the heritage of the neighbourhood, as it used to be the location of many hardware companies. History buffs would also be glad to know that the cafe is located on Tyrwhitt Road, named after Admiral Reginald Yorke Tyrwhitt (1870-1975), who was one of the leading commanders in World War 1.
Upon entering the cafe's compound, the coffee lover is greeted by an Al Fresco dining area as well as a unique 360-degree indoor island coffee bar. Coffee is available as V60 and Chemex, as well as from the sleek Synesso MVP Hydra machine. Speaking of machines, a mini Pacman arcade machine is made available to play freely, taking customers back to the nostalgic times of 1980s and 1990s. It is the perfect setting for great conversation and cups of specialty coffee. The cafe is also a flagship store of the roastery, Papa Palhetam, which is renowned for roasting and purveying specialty coffee in Singapore and Malaysia. In all, this is a coffee experience that goes beyond the coffee – what more can you ask for?
