Coffee Bru
Beukenplein 14, 1092 Amsterdam, Netherlands
Editor's Review
A star in the East, you might call this venue, for being one of the first third wave cafes in Amsterdam Oost. Coffee Bru opened in autumn 2011, before the neighbourhood underwent a conspicuous Brooklynification, which saw creative-industry folks and young families start moving in and swaying the commercial landscape.
In the early days, Coffee Bru used beans from Dutch specialty roasters Bocca, though for years now has been relying on Rum Baba – the micro-roaster is not only a convenient 10-minute walk away, but the two businesses are very familiar. Rum Baba owners Jeroen Keizer and Lusan Drost co-own Coffee Bru, along with Lusan’s sister, Marie-Louise Drost, and her partner, Joris Kobussen.
Situated on a lively square among other intriguing food and drink options, the cafe provides generous outdoor seating. Inside, various constellations of tables spread across two rooms. The interior is hospitable throughout the seasons, with the back wall and the floorboards – painted in canary yellow – projecting perpetual sunniness.
