Coffee & Coconuts is in a word: otherworldly. The tri-level restaurant with room for over 300 guests breaks the ceiling of typical Amsterdam capacities. That’s even more remarkable when you consider that it is in De Pijp, an ever-densifying neighbourhood that in the last decade has become a favourite for easy-jetters, modish shops and the most Instagram-genic of eateries.

Coffee & Coconuts occupies the former Ceintuur Theatre, a cinema built in the 1920s, and its owners have beautifully preserved and enhanced the edifice. The décor is tropical, accessorized by wicker lampshades and neutral-toned settees. It’s a feel-good place, much like the Harry Nilsson lyrics interspersed through its menu. Besides solidly prepared coffee, at your disposal are coconuts – tapped with a straw, garnished with a lime and, if you like, spiked – along with juices, wine, cocktails and beer.

Plus, there is quality breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner fare; vegetarians and sugar-sceptics have various options, but so do traditionalists seeking, say, a cheeseburger or a pastrami sandwich.
