Culture Espresso — 38th & 8th
307 W. 38th St, New York, NY 10018
Editor's Review
This location of the great midtown mini-chain Culture Espresso sits on a somewhat faceless block in the Garment District that until recently was completely forgettable. But as this neighborhood explodes with activity – 38th Street now boasts several destination boutiques, restaurants, a hotel, and some luxury apartments as well – it makes perfect sense for Culture to arrive with great espresso.
This is a small, no-nonsense cafe designed primarily for the to-go crowd, but they still have managed to capture some of the funky vibe of their other spots. Enjoy some cool tunes while you wait for your order, served by a young, hip, but very knowledgeable and friendly staff. These days Culture generally brews Heart Coffee Roasters, with some occasional other roast options. They are also known for truly great homemade chocolate chip and oatmeal cranberry cookies, and they feature a nice selection from other premium bakeries like Ceci-Cela, Blue Sky Bakery, Ovenly (including gluten free options), Dough Doughnuts, Corner Café, and Magpies. The coffee here is wonderful and, though it's small, the space is an oasis, a casual relaxed escape, just around the corner from the madness of 8th Avenue.
