Daily Goods
36 Camberwell Church St, Camberwell, SE5 8QZ
Editor's Review
Carter's Daily Goods concession within Soho's Kinoko Cycles on Golden Square was always a favourite spot for an espresso and a bit of friendly banter, so I was delighted to hear he was opening a cafe in SE London.
Daily Goods now stands on Camberwell's Church Street and is just what the area's been crying out for. The space is relaxed and spacious with abundant seating, a clean and sleek concrete bar and neutral furnishings. Where the new cafe excels is in the details that make it so very easy to love; Carter is one of the nicest guys in the industry and rather than try and make a cafe that's cool (though, of course, it is), he's created a space that is welcoming and simply works on a number of levels. There are plug sockets by each table, WiFi and bulk brew, e.g. he wants you here and he's happy for you stay. It very much reminds me of the unfussy and effortless cafes of New York that Carter originally drew influence from, here he does it with unpretentious aplomb and bucket loads of charm.
I expected the coffee to be good, roasted by Daily Goods in collaboration with Quarter Horse of Birmingham, and it most certainly is, espresso is still excellent and the filter made on SP9 brewwers hits the spot perfectly. Daily Goods is a fantastic spot south of the river and a great example of a new breed of cafe!
