Elan Café is different. This stylish café, close to The Dorchester is full of the scent of roses – both from flowers inside the café and in baskets of bicycles fixed outside. Elan is popular and seats are often occupied quickly and lingered in long. Founder Alexandra Miller has carefully designed the café’s offer and brought in key staff such as executive head chef Bradshaw Jooste and innovative head of coffee operations, Joao Almeida. Joao has introduced ahead of the curve drinks such as rooibos espresso and a take on the avocado latte where coffee is served in a ceramic avocado shaped cup that mimics the texture of avocado as well as the look. Coffee is from Union and very well made. French press filters are also available.

Jooste ensures am entirely halal food offer that delights the senses. Originally from Cape Town with an influence from Cape Malay. Flora teaflowers bloom in hot water before you and other notable suppliers include Prana Chai, Red Espresso, Sandows, Hannah Sell’s Teas and Frank and Earnest. There is no extra charge for the alternatives to dairy: oat, almond, coconut or rice.  Food is all halal and ranges from breakfast bowls to hot plates such as lamb shoulder with spelt tabbouleh, hummus, flatbread and pomegranate molasses. Baked goods are spectacular. Everything is equally Instagram friendly and flavoursome.

Elan have also created a collection of natural and sustainable beauty products using a minimum-waste system. Because these contain no preservatives or harmful chemicals, they should be used within 24 hours. Another unique aspect of Elan is the late opening in an alcohol free environment. Alcohol-free cocktails are available though.
