Espressofabriek Koffiebar en Café
IJburglaan 1489, 1087 KM Amsterdam, Netherlands
Editor's Review
Before the advent of Airbnb to Amsterdam, alerting out-of-towners to Espressofabriek’s second branch might have been seen as a tip of folly. But now that visitors are becoming less city-centre-centric, there is every reason to recommend this café, which stands alone in the specialty coffee category on breezy, beachy Ijburg. A residential community in the city’s far east, Ijburg was not only developed in just the last couple decades, but it was built as a cluster of six artificial islands in the Ijmeer lake.
This Espressofabriek tends to be chill, with wood-slat-lined ceilings and non-upholstered benches creating a Scandinavian sauna vibe; neatly shelved toys for kids and photography displays offer pleasant stimulation. Like its flagship across town in the Westergasfabriek, it serves homemade apple pie, among other baked goods, as well as lunch from De Tweede Jeugd, a startup that transforms day-old bread from local bakeries into memorable toasties (consider: kimchi & kaas or mushrooms & Manchego).
