Esters takes over where much loved Fred & Fran left off. Stepping into their shoes being more of a daunting prospect than might normally be the case due to the former's loyal customer base and beaming reputation.

I visit on a dreary Saturday to find the cafe comfortingly cosy, and slowly filling up with locals, steamed up windows a barrier to the cold outside. A beautiful selection of in-house baked sweet things and St John doughnuts are backed up with a proper brunch menu including the must-try section of 'egg' dishes.

A nod to a warmer climate is reflected in breezy white washed walls with flashes of egg shell blue and hand painted tile. There's a good selection of Has Bean coffees on offer. Both my Chemex brewed filter and espresso are extremely well made and service is relaxed and welcoming.

Stoke Newington can breath a sigh of relief - they've got their cafe back.
