Fort Defiance
365 Van Brunt St., Brooklyn, NY 11231
Editor's Review
Fort Defiance, sitting on a lovely tree-lined corner on the commercial strip of “downtown” Red Hook, is really more of a restaurant and bar than a proper café. But they make a mean espresso, they carry a nice line of Counter Culture beans, and they are more than happy to entertain a coffee-only customer, even during their busy brunch and dinner hours. The food service includes egg and yogurt options at breakfast, like their great huevos rancheros, and an inspired biscuit sandwich. For lunch they have sandwiches and salads, plus some nice upscale options like smoked trout, or roasted asparagus. Weekend brunch combines and expands on the above, and the dinner menu usually includes choices like skirt steak, branzino, and risotto. They also have a few specialty nights, like Burger Mondays, and a Tiki-themed Thursday soiree.
But what about the coffee you say? They serve all the usual espresso and filter options, and especially if you can wander through here on a quiet weekday afternoon, it’s a truly special spot to get your caffeine buzz on.
