Four Boroughs

10 Church Rd, SE19 2ET

Editor's Review

Four Boroughs’ strapline reads ‘coffee, beer, food, kombucha’ and that certainly drew us to visit. The cafe was set up by friends from Brixton Cycles Cycling Club and their emphasis is on ‘good things’ – good in terms of quality, health and environmental impact. They are a great addition to Crystal Palace on Church Road, not far from where Ant West ran the coffeeshop in Bambino from 2010 to 2013.

For coffee, Four Boroughs have turned to Assembly and serve well-made drinks whether espresso or filter based. It’s a comfortable well-lit space with an elegant birch bar and furniture made by a relative of one of the trio of owners and strong branding and design. A high level of thought went into the choice of products stocked including some unusual and delicious locally made spreads and environmentally conscious re-sealable aluminium cans of water. The sustainable approach even extends to waste coffee grounds which are recycled into Coffee Logs by Bio-bean.

Beers are selected from local breweries. Meanwhile, ‘the conscientious cook’ supplies the cakes and Brew Tea, the tea. Soft drinks options include only water, kombuchas (from Jarr and others) and dairy and water based kefirs as Four Boroughs attempt to spread the word about these quality fermented beverages. Food on offer includes sourdough toast and spreads, overnight oats, cakes and falafel.
