Fowlds Cafe
3 Addington Square, Camberwell, SE5 7JZ
Editor's Review
Square Mile coffee in Camberwell? About time. This charming neighbourhood café, set in a delightful square near Camberwell Road, feels like it is already firmly established in its community. Indeed the café itself was funded by the local residents and both parties clearly benefit from that arrangement. One other remarkable feature of this place is that its name refers to a family upholstery business established in 1870 that continues to thrive in the workshop behind the café. Some cafes take on the name of an older business formerly occupying the premises but Fowlds is more of a genuine collaboration. Furniture restoration and coffee – a unique symbiosis.
The café is very small with only a few seats available inside and a few outside - although Burgess Park beckons. Customers moved happily around to accommodate us. We took prime seats at the bar to gaze on the delicious looking cakes, converse with the friendly staff and enjoy our coffee - occasionally shifting in our seats to accommodate one of the crew nimbly bending under the counter to deliver a coffee.
Fowlds serves a good Redbrick espresso (especially courtesy head barista Ursula) and also tea, porridge, cakes, soups and sandwiches. I look forward to sampling these. Bread and baked goods are from Flour Station and indeed the café sells loaves of bread as well.
