Frederix Roastery X Coffee Bar
Frederiksplein 29-BG, 1017XL Amsterdam, Netherlands
Its name is a nod to Frederiksplein. This grid of charming streets places the café within the same neighbourhood as canal-side homes, boutique hotels, one-of-a-kind speciality shops and, to be fair, the vapid bars and cannabis caves of Rembrandtplein and Heineken Experience. Still, Frederix is joyfully emblematic of its mixed surroundings.
Locals, expats and out-of-towners are all welcomed by the upbeat, easy-going staff, starting at 7am on weekdays – opening at that hour is exotically early in this city. The micro-roaster serves and sells all its own coffees. Alongside homemade baked goods, Frederix has a solid lunch menu, offering sandwiches, soups and chilli.
With marble tables, bistro chairs and leather chesterfields, the interior breaks from the Scandinavian minimalism that has swept over many contemporary cafés. Instead, it invokes a French brasserie or, when served by the expressive Italian head barista, an ambience perhaps even farther south into the Mediterranean.
