Irving Farm Coffee Roasters — Third Avenue
1424 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA
Editor's Review
Founded with one Gramercy café well more than 20 years ago, Irving Farm has been serving great coffee in New York City since before the current craze brought scores of new roasters and cafes to the city. And while they predate most of the trendy “Third Wave” companies, Irving Farm are both pioneers and followers of the movement, and they make an espresso to rival just about any in town.
All that said, this Upper East Side location is, at it’s core, really more of a restaurant than a coffee bar. And while they serve plenty of great espresso drinks and other coffee specialties, the clientele here are as likely to be coming in for the (delicious) shakshuka on a roll, Green Eggs and Jamon, or the Freekeh bowl, amongst many great breakfast options, or the charred okra salad perhaps at lunch, or maybe the Peruvian grilled chicken sandwich. They also carry a broad range of baked goods, mostly from Good Batch and Bread Alone. Don’t get me wrong, the coffee options, including multiple single-origin pour-over choices, or various espresso drinks, are all well-thought and executed. But the barista is as likely to be pouring an Arnold Palmer as a cortado.
